Stoke-on-Trent is unusual among English cities in that it was never really one town to begin with. It is a federation of six (Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, Fenton and Stoke-upon-Trent), each with its own high street, its own housing patterns and its own relationship with the pottery industry that shaped the whole area for two centuries. We work across all six, and we run our business from Adderley Green, tucked between Longton and Bentilee, so the drive to a job in any of the six towns is short whichever direction it runs.

That history shows up in the housing stock in ways that matter to anyone fitting a window. Close to the old bottle kilns and works in Burslem and parts of Longton you find dense Victorian and Edwardian terraces, built shoulder to shoulder for pottery workers, with narrow frontages, sash-proportioned openings and, in many streets, a conservation designation that shapes what can go in without a fight over planning. Original timber sashes in these terraces are often draughty, swollen, or painted shut after a century of repainting, and owners want a replacement that keeps the period look (slim sightlines, correct glazing bar proportions where they exist), while actually shutting properly and cutting the draught that comes straight off the street.

Further out, in areas like Trentham, Blurton, Weston Coyney and parts of Fenton, the 1930s semi is the dominant house type: bay-fronted, often with the original steel or timber-framed windows long since swapped at least once, sometimes twice, by a previous owner working to a different budget. These houses respond well to A-rated replacement units that keep the bay's proportions but bring the U-value up to something the original glazing never got close to. We see plenty of tired 1980s and 1990s uPVC in these same streets now reaching the end of its life (sealed units gone cloudy, hinges dropped, locking gear seized), and swapping like-for-like frames in a bay is a job we do often enough to know exactly where the extra time goes.

The post-war estates around Bentilee, Abbey Hulton, Berryhill and parts of Meir bring their own considerations. Many of these homes were built quickly after the war with standard window openings and simple detailing, and decades on they are a mix of original steel casements, 1970s aluminium and newer uPVC of varying quality. Exposure varies more than people expect across these estates (some streets sit high and catch the wind off open ground, others are more sheltered), and we specify accordingly rather than fitting the same thing on every job regardless of aspect.

Stoke-on-Trent also has a genuinely mixed commercial and residential centre in Hanley, the city's shopping and civic heart, where shopfronts, flats above shops and older commercial buildings all need glazing that meets current safety requirements without looking like an afterthought. We have fitted composite doors on terraced streets a five-minute drive from Hanley bus station and toughened shopfront glass in the same week, and both jobs get the same measured, no-shortcuts approach.

Because we are based in Adderley Green, we are rarely more than a short drive from any address across the six towns: Tunstall in the north, Longton in the south, Fenton and Stoke town in between. That matters for the practical parts of the job: turning up on time for a survey, coming back promptly if a hinge needs adjusting after fitting, and being a genuinely local firm rather than a national installer working from a call centre two counties away.
