The service
Fix the part that failed, not the window around it
Double glazing repair covers everything that goes wrong with an otherwise sound window: a sealed unit that has misted because its perimeter seal failed, hinges that have worn so the sash drops and catches, handles that spin without engaging, multi-point gearboxes that no longer throw, and gaskets that have shrunk and hardened until the draught comes straight through.
It is the right service for anyone whose frames are still square, solid and the colour they want. If the uPVC or timber is sound, replacing an entire window because one component has failed is money spent on parts that were working perfectly well. A repair keeps the frame, restores the performance and costs considerably less.
The moment to call is when you see condensation trapped between the panes, a cloudy or streaky film that will not wipe off, a window that needs lifting to lock, a handle that turns without resistance, a draught you can feel at the seal line, or a hinge that squeals and binds. Each of these is a component fault, not a window fault.
Professional diagnosis matters because the symptoms overlap. A window that will not lock might have a worn gearbox, misaligned keeps, dropped hinges or a distorted frame, and the cheap fix for one is a waste of money on another. We diagnose before we quote, and we tell you honestly when a frame has gone too far and replacement is the better spend.
Who it is for
Homeowners, landlords and businesses with sound frames and failed components who do not want the cost or disruption of a full replacement.
When it is needed
Misting between the panes, draughts at the seal, sashes that drop or catch, handles that spin, locks that will not throw, or hinges that have seized.
What is included
On-site diagnosis, a written price for the repair, supply of replacement units or hardware, fitting, adjustment and testing of the completed window.
What happens if it waits
Small faults do not stay small, and they rarely stay cheap
A misted unit is the visible sign that the perimeter seal has failed, which means the cavity is no longer sealed and the gas fill has gone. From that moment the window has lost a meaningful share of its insulation and it is behaving closer to single glazing. You do not just lose the view; you lose the performance you paid for, on every cold day, indefinitely.
Hardware failures escalate faster still. A hinge that has begun to wear lets the sash drop; the dropped sash forces the locking gear to work at an angle; the gear wears against the keeps; and the day the gearbox finally fails the window is either jammed shut or, worse, jammed open. Replaced early the part is inexpensive; replaced late the whole locking mechanism goes with it.
The mistake we correct most often is force. Handles hauled harder each week, sashes shouldered shut, WD-40 sprayed into a gearbox that needed proper lubricant. Forcing a mechanism that is already misaligned does not fix the alignment; it strips the gear and turns a straightforward part swap into a full hardware replacement, and occasionally into a new frame.
Insulation already lost
Once a sealed unit has misted the cavity is compromised. You keep heating the room and keep losing it through glazing that no longer performs.
Hardware failure spreading
A worn hinge stresses the locking gear, and a stressed gearbox eventually strips: turning a cheap part into a full mechanism replacement.
Windows that jam shut or open
A failed mechanism can leave a window that will not close and secure, which is an urgent problem on a ground floor or a rental property.
Condensation damaging the room
Cold, failed glazing brings condensation onto cills and reveals, and persistent damp leads to mould, ruined paintwork and softened timber.
Our process
Diagnose first, price second, repair third
We never quote a repair without seeing what has actually failed, because the wrong part fitted well is still the wrong part.
- STEP 1
Inspection
We look at every affected window, check the frame for squareness and identify whether the fault is glazing, hardware or alignment.
- STEP 2
Diagnosis & honest advice
You are told which component has failed and whether repair or replacement is the better value route for that specific window.
- STEP 3
Written price & parts
The repair is priced in writing and the correct units or hardware are ordered to match your existing profile and system.
- STEP 4
Repair execution
Units are swapped and re-beaded, or hinges, handles, gaskets and gearboxes are replaced, with the sash re-hung and packed correctly.
- STEP 5
Testing & verification
Every opener is tested through its full range, the locking is checked through the full throw, and the operation is demonstrated to you.
What you get
Why repairing a sound window is usually the better decision
A fraction of replacement cost
Swapping a sealed unit or a hinge set costs far less than a new window because you are not paying again for a frame that is doing its job.
Same-visit fixes in many cases
Common hardware faults (handles, hinges, gaskets, adjustments) are frequently resolved in a single visit once the parts are to hand.
Insulation restored
A new A-rated sealed unit brings the window back to a modern thermal specification without touching the frame or the plasterwork.
Minimal disruption indoors
No frames removed, no reveals disturbed, no making good and no redecorating afterwards: the room is back in use the same day.
Security restored properly
New gear correctly aligned to the keeps means the lock engages at every point again, rather than clinging on at one.
Straight advice on what is worth saving
If a frame is beyond economic repair we say so rather than selling a repair that will not hold, and we quote both routes so you can compare.
In detail
What actually fails, and how each fault is put right
Almost every double glazing fault falls into one of four categories. Knowing which one you have is most of the job.
Misted and failed sealed units
A sealed unit is two or three panes bonded to a spacer bar containing a desiccant. When the perimeter seal fails, moist air enters, the desiccant saturates and moisture condenses inside the cavity where no cleaning can reach. The misting is the symptom; the seal failure is the fault.
The repair is to replace the unit alone. We measure the glass, order a new A-rated unit with a low-emissivity coating, warm-edge spacer and gas fill, then remove the beads, swap the unit onto new setting blocks and re-bead. The frame, hardware and plasterwork are untouched, and the window comes back better than it was when new.
Hinges, friction stays and dropped sashes
Friction stays carry the whole weight of an opening sash. As they wear, the sash drops at the leading edge, catches the frame and stops meeting its seal cleanly. Left alone the misalignment transfers load into the locking gear.
We replace stays with the correct length and load rating for the sash, refit and re-pack the glazing so the weight is carried through the correct corners, and adjust until the sash closes on its seal along the full perimeter. Fire escape hinges and restrictors are replaced like for like where they are fitted.
Handles, locks, gearboxes and keeps
Espagnolette and shootbolt gear runs the height of the sash and drives hooks or mushroom cams into keeps on the frame. Failures show up as a handle that spins, a handle that will not lift, or a lock that only engages at one point.
We replace like-for-like gearboxes and cranks where the system is still supported, fit new handles and lockable options where security matters, and, crucially, realign the keeps afterwards. Realignment is the step most often skipped, and it is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails again in a year.
Gaskets, draughts and when to replace instead
Rubber gaskets harden and shrink with UV exposure, opening a draught line and letting water sit where it should be shed. Replacing the gasket run and clearing blocked drainage slots is inexpensive and often removes a draught the homeowner had blamed on the glass.
There is a point where repair stops making sense: frames that have distorted beyond adjustment, welds that have opened, timber that has rotted through, or a house where most units have failed at once. In those cases we quote replacement and set the two figures side by side so the decision is yours on the numbers.

If your question is not here, call Anthony Jones on 01782 479526. A two-minute conversation usually settles it, and there is never any pressure to book.
How much does it cost to fix a misted double glazed unit?+
It depends on the size of the pane, the glass specification and how many units are affected: several at once usually reduces the cost per unit. We measure and quote in writing, and there is no charge for the assessment.
Can a misted unit be repaired without replacing the glass?+
No, not reliably. Once the perimeter seal has failed the cavity cannot be restored, and drilling and drying treatments do not bring back the gas fill or the thermal performance. Replacing the sealed unit is the proper fix.
Do I need a whole new window if one unit has misted?+
Almost never. If the frame is square and sound we replace the glass alone. That is faster, far cheaper and involves no disturbance to your plasterwork or decoration.
How long does a repair take?+
Most hardware repairs are completed within a single visit. Sealed units are measured first and fitted once the glass has been made, usually a short lead time, and the swap itself takes under an hour per unit.
My window will not lock: can that be fixed?+
Usually yes. Most locking faults are a worn gearbox, a failed handle or misaligned keeps caused by a dropped sash. We diagnose which it is and fit the correct part rather than forcing an adjustment.
Can you repair old windows if the system is discontinued?+
Often, yes. A great many hardware profiles are still supported or have direct equivalents. If a part genuinely cannot be matched we will tell you and quote the alternative rather than bodging a fit.
Do you handle urgent repairs where a window will not secure?+
Call the office and explain the situation. We will advise on making the opening secure immediately and tell you honestly how quickly we can attend.
Is the repair work guaranteed?+
Replacement sealed units and hardware carry manufacturer cover, and our full installations are covered by a 10-year insurance backed guarantee under Assure certification. We explain exactly which cover applies to your job in the quotation.
How long will a replacement sealed unit last?+
A quality modern unit with a warm-edge spacer should give many years of service: typically longer than the units it replaces, because manufacturing and sealing standards have improved considerably.
Which areas do you cover for repairs?+
Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding Staffordshire and Cheshire towns, including Newcastle-under-Lyme, Birches Head, Milton, Stone, Alsager, Crewe and Sandbach.
